Statement of Problem

We are concerned if we are applying enough nitrogen fertilizer at topdress to our winter wheat in Central Kansas.

Project Objectives

This is a continuation of the work we did for a KARA grant in 2004 -- merely adding "site years" to our data base.

Methodology

We will apply a base rate of nitrogen at topdress (winter/spring 05) to growing winter wheat in the form of UAN (liquid 32-0-0 or 28-0-0) to various fields using our simple fertilizer rec formula:  (wheat yield goal * 1.8) minus (starter fertilizer) minus (Soil test N) minus (previous soybean crop (about .5 # N credit per bushel of yield)) minus (any other topdress applications).  For selected topdress strips (sprayer width = 90 feet) we will increase the base rate by 20# N/A.  We will use a AutoTrac equipped sprayer with as applied mapping.  All other cultural practices are to remain the same.  After harvesting with a yield monitor  and AutoTrac equipped combine (header = 35 feet), we will select harvest strips for analysis in the base rate area and the added Nitrogen area.  Further analysis will be done based on KSU researcher's suggestions.

Expected outcome / Benefit to KARA
To demonstrate a simple method of doing on Farm research with tools already available to Precision Ag practitioners.
