|
There has been some general information in the literature regarding
the importance of planter speed as it impacts yield. However, this
investigator has not been able to identifiy any definitive results
which document the direct relationship between planter speed and
yield. |

|
The ultimate objective is to identify a direct relationship between
planter speed and the resultatnt yield that this input factor might
influence. |

A NT CCS 24x30 JD planter will be employed to plant milo no-till in
wheat stubble in late May or early June as weather and soil moisture
dictates. The milo will be planted in 30" x 1320' rows. The planter
speed will be set at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 miles per hour. Speed
will be the only variable. Stand counts will be taken at half bloom
to see how planter speed might impact the final population. Yields of
the harvested crop will be documented with a yield map, and by
employing a weigh wagon to verify yields. The resulting yields will
then be validated in the farm office and recorded for study, evaluated
in the farm office and recorded for study, evaluation and
documentation. A poster and/or Power Point presentation will then be
formatted. |

Expected outcome / Benefit to KARA |
|
|
|
|
|
|
The objective of the study is to establish a recommended rate of
planter speed for planting milo in a no-till dryland wheat stubble
situation, which will then enhance the net return from the operation |
