My wife, Susan, and I farm. The farm,
that I grew up on and now operate with my dad and brother, is located in
northern Clay County. We started yield mapping in 1998 and have a
light bar system that records data for our sprayer. We have been
logging planter information for 2 years, and have just added a rate controller
to our drill. We use local fertilizer dealers to help analyze the information and VRT
some of our fertilizer. We are planning on doing more of our own analysis and VRT in
the future.
I have been a KARA member since 2002 and have
learned a lot about GPS data collection and analysis from other
members, but realize I have a long way to go. Participation in
KARA has given me the courage to do a lot more on-farm research and the
know-how to make it simpler and more viable to our operation. KARA has
also supplied me with some funding to help me start doing some on-farm
research (Phosphorus study, Lime study, & Potash study). I
also enjoy and learn from the visits I have with other KARA members at
workshops, the annual meeting & wherever I run into one of them.
Randy Taylor & Scott
Staggenborg always have very good information. If I don't think it
applies to me, it does make me think about how I can use something similar
in my operation or just step back and look at my operation and where it is
headed. I am glad they are supervisors of the KARA group.
